Introducing Shockwave Therapy

We are so happy to now provide focused shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT). What is it? Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic sound waves to stimulate the body's natural healing process. This technology was originally used in 1980 for lithotripsy to break up kidney stones. It promotes rapid tissue repair, increases growth factors and stem cell production, provides pain relief, and has the ability to promote joint regenerate regeneration. In other words, this therapy breaks up scar tissue, reduces inflammation, and allows your body to unlock healing potential that has otherwise been blocked, especially in more chronic conditions. It is FDA-approved, and success rates range anywhere from 60-91% in 4-12 treatments, depending on condition and other factors. Various conditions that can be targeted include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Achilles Tendonopathy

  • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

  • Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

How many sessions will you need?

This is the beauty of shockwave. Across the board, you're really looking at an average of 6-8 treatments, maximum. Obviously, there is room for individual variation, but for the most part, you're not looking at an absurd number of sessions. Because this treatment has a "layering effect," we will often recommend the package options because it will save a little money in the long run, but also give you the most evidence-backed treatment protocols. This is not a miracle "one and done" treatment. You do have to give your body a chance to respond to the therapy. Generally, following your final session of a treatment plan, you can still see improvement up to 3-4 months later. So, the full result is not known until well after the treatment plan is completed.

How long is a session?

The first visit will be 30 minutes to gain a history and idea of what the goal of the treatment is. On average, the actual treatment takes approximately 4-10 minutes. Our regular sessions are 15-minute slots.

What does it feel like?

The best way to describe it is like a dull ache. You will only feel discomfort through the tissue that is actually inflamed or restricted. You will not feel the shockwave sensation over healthy tissue. So, in a lot of ways, it will be both diagnostic of the problem tissue for me and validating to the patient that there is indeed a problem!

If there are additional questions or concerns, feel free to reach out or discuss in the office. We  hope to provide another level of healing for you that may not have been possible before.
